Transplantation Services

Loyola is one of the major solid organ transplant centers in the United States. At Loyola, we set the standard for excellence in transplantation. Our transplant programs that rank as state and national leaders are heart, lung, and heart-lung. Our health-care providers are here to improve the life of patients by caring for them in mind, body and spirit.

Bone Marrow Transplantation Program
Loyola's clinical researchers are recognized nationally for their pioneering cancer research and treatment programs using stem cell and bone marrow transplantation, chemotherapy, biologic response modifiers, surgery and radiation therapy. Since 1994, cancer patients have participated in more than 200 clinical trials at Loyola, allowing them to receive therapies that are not yet available at community hospitals.

Cornea Transplantation Program
More than 150 cornea transplants have been performed since 1990.

Heart Transplantation Program
More than 600 heart transplants have been performed since the Medicare-approved program began in March 1984. Loyola is one of the oldest and most active programs in the U.S. Current one-year, five-year, and 10-year survival rates are 87 percent, 70 percent and 50 percent respectively.

Heart/Lung Transplantation Program
More than 25 heart-lung transplants have been performed at Loyola since 1986, when Loyola performed the first such procedure in Illinois.

Intra-Abdominal Organ Transplant Division
The Intra-Abdominal Organ Transplant Division treats diseases of the liver and kidneys. Surgeons anticipate adding intestinal and small bowel transplants to complete the intra-abdominal program, which already includes liver and kidney transplantation.

Kidney Transplantation Program
More than 775 kidney transplants have been performed since the program's inception in 1971. Short- and long-term graft survivals, as well as low rejection rates in adult and pediatric recipients, are among the best in the United States.

Liver Transplantation Program
At Loyola, 165 liver transplants have been completed since the first liver transplant was done in July 1, 1997.

Current 90-day, one-year, and five-year patient survival rates are 94 percent, 90 percent and 78 percent respectively. Survival rates match or exceed national averages as determined by United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).

Lung Transplantation Program
More than 500 lung transplants have been performed at Loyola since 1990, making Loyola the largest lung transplant center in Illinois and among the top programs in the United States. Loyola's lung transplant specialists perform approximately 30 lung transplants a year.

Loyola is the only lung transplant program in Illinois that is Medicare-approved. Additionally, Loyola is United Network for Organ Sharing and Blue Cross/Blue Shield approved.
