Diabetes Care Center

The Loyola University Health System (Loyola) Diabetes Care Center provides comprehensive group and individualized treatment programs to adults with diabetes. The center utilizes the team approach to patient care, providing the patient with the expertise of a variety of health professionals. This includes board certified endocrinologists, advanced practice nurses who are certified diabetes educators, and a dietitian who has a PhD in nutrition and also is a certified diabetes educator. In addition, a social worker is available as needed.

Loyola's Diabetes Care Center program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and follows the ADA's standards of care. These standards are directed toward ideal control of diabetes and prevention of complications.

Services offered:

  • Physician evaluation
  • Group classes, offered at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and at the Loyola Center for Health at Oakbrook Terrace North office, are conducted by the nurse educators and dietitians. Classes include:
    • Diabetes disease process
    • Nutrition management
    • Physical activity
    • Medications
    • Monitoring, prevention, detection and treatment of acute and chronic complications
    • Goal setting
    • Problem solving
    • Psychosocial adjustment
  • Individual treatment programs

Nurse educators and dietitions, working closely with each patient's physician, develop individualized care plans. Individual discussions include the areas covered in group classes, as well as preconception care, management during pregnancy, gestational management and intensive insulin management, including pump training.
