Loyola has offered cardiac surgery for more than 25 years. Within the past five years, more than 4,000 open-heart surgeries were performed, placing the hospital among the top centers for volume. Thoracic and cardiovascular surgery includes surgery on the heart, lung, airways, chest wall, mediastinum and esophagus.
From routine coronary artery bypass and carotid surgeries to the most challenging cases, Loyola's faculty members apply considerable expertise and compassionate care. They are on the leading edge of developments in heart and lung transplantation, minimally invasive heart surgery, heart valve repair and replacement, thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair, cardiomyoplasty, endoscopic vein harvesting and complex congenital procedures.
In fact, Loyola cardiovascular surgeons perform robotic surgery for mitral valve repair, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), and patent foramen ovum (PFO), atrial septal defect (ASD) closures, and resection of mediastinal and lung tumors, among others.

Heart Valve Surgery and ReplacementMore than 200 valve procedures are performed annually. Loyola’s surgeons are skilled at valve remodeling with prosthetic reinforcement or valve replacement with a state-of-the-art mechanical or tissue valve.
Heart and Lung Transplantation
Loyola was a pioneer in heart transplantation and is now one of the nation’s most active programs, having performed more than 600 transplants since 1984. Loyola is recognized as one of the top centers in the United States for lung transplantation, having performed more than 500 lung transplants since 1988.
Ventricular Assist Devices
Loyola’s surgeons are highly skilled at implanting a range of ventricular assist devices (mechanical pumps) as a bridge to recovery or transplantation.
Off-Pump Heart Surgery
Loyola has performed off-pump heart surgery for more than five years. Stabilizing devices on the heart enable surgeons to bypass the coronary artery while the heart is beating.
Lung Reduction Surgery
Loyola is one of the few hospitals offering lung reduction surgery to remove the most diseased portion of a lung.
Aortic Surgery
Loyola surgeons have vast experience in performing complex, staged repairs of the ascending, arch, descending, thoracoabdominal and isolated abdominal aorta, including those of Marfan patients.
Research
Basic science and translational research into the development, treatment and prevention of heart disease is conducted through the Cardiovascular Institute research division. Clinical studies in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery investigate techniques and clinical outcomes after various surgical interventions, including pre-transplant interventions for end-stage heart disease.Location
